National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) Practice Exam

When a GP (gas permeable) lens wearer experiences a scratchy feeling upon lens insertion that increases with wear, blending the junction zone is a likely solution to address this discomfort.

Blending the junction zone refers to smoothing the transition between the central optical zone of the lens and the peripheral zone where the lens rests on the eye. A well-blended junction can reduce surface irregularities and create a more comfortable fit, significantly alleviating any scratchiness or irritation the wearer may feel. If the junction is too abrupt, it can lead to discomfort as the lens moves with the eyelid during blinking, causing increased friction against the cornea.

While changing the care regimen, removing the CN bevel, or decreasing the total lens diameter could potentially address specific issues with lens comfort or fit, they may not directly resolve the scratchy feeling caused by the lens's design and interaction with the eyelid. Therefore, blending the junction zone is the most focused approach to enhance the comfort experienced by the wearer.
